Communities Build Confidence and Identity

March 30, 2007 by sachinskg

Community living could be a great way of spending your retirement years. People have a natural tendency to interact with others who share the same social status, political affiliation, hobbies or even age range.

Communities go beyond simply having people living in proximity to each other. It is also about striving together in pursuit of shared ambitions. An individual can choose to immerse himself deeply within a community’s activities or watch from a distance. Whatever the case, he or she can still count themselves as part of the community.

Senior citizens can gain a sense of pride in their communities. They have the freedom to take the lead and organize events for other people’s benefit, or they can be part of the crowd. These types of events are excellent vehicles for different communities to get together and share their interests.

Communities itself can take many forms. They can comprise ethnic and religious groups, people of common political leanings or simply those who share the same hobby. Inter-community activities are a good way for people of different backgrounds to learn about each other and exchange ideas and skills.

The best thing about community life is that there is no membership limit. Whether it is culture, religion or hobbies, there is always an open door policy. Communities can be as large, or as small, as required by its membership.

It is important to remember that, upon joining a community, either officially or through being close to people, you must stick to the written and unwritten rules. This way, you will avoid conflict on misunderstanding with your fellow community members.

Communities may take many shapes, forms and definitions. Their main purpose, though, is to help people establish some sort of identity and a sense of belonging.
