Retirement Speeches - Lasting Words of Wisdom

May 18, 2007 by sachinskg

As the chosen one, it is your job to write the best retirement speech ever on behalf of your retiring friend or relative. Just as a best man performs a speech for the groom, your retirement speech is something that will be the focal point of the party.

Indeed, more people will remember what you say in your retirement speech than what kind of food was served. Therefore, it is important that you get it right. It is a special occasion for your retiring friend and you want to make sure he has fond memories of your speech.

As the one chosen to give the speech, it is assumed that you know the retiree very well. Therefore, you won’t have to do much research into his or her personality. You intimate knowledge of his personality and whims put you in a great position to write the perfect speech.

You will know exactly what is appropriate for the occasion, whether to include some sharp wit and humor, if it’s going to be a reflective speech or whether a straight forward piece is best.

What you should avoid are somber and negative words that make it look as if retirement is the end of the world. Make it positive and include some funny anecdotes from the person’s life. That helps to lighten up the speech and even provide inspiration for those around him.

The main thing is that you must have written the speech yourself. Copying other speeches and substituting the name is impersonal and doesn’t afford respect to your friend.

However, there is no harm in you going on the Internet to read other retirement speeches in order to get some ideas. You could read how others have tackled their speeches and incorporate some of the ideas into your own speech.

Just make sure the speech retains your unique tone and you are sure to provide your friend with some memories that will last the rest of his life.
