Turn Your Retirement Letters into Special Souvenirs

May 1, 2007 by sachinskg

Retirement letters end up being treasured mementos for retirees. That is because they express joy, sadness, hope and reflection of the life you have lived so far and the life you are looking forward to under very different circumstances.

There is an art to writing these retirement letters but the most important thing is for you to write from the heart. Sit down with your pen and paper and basically write down everything that comes to your mind.

Do not worry about spelling or grammar to begin with. This is only a draft. Just jot down all your memories, feelings, people who are important to you, your hopes, your triumphs, regrets, achievements and other aspects of life and expectations of the future that you feel are important.

Once you are sure you have mentioned everything you need, put the paper away and forget about it for a few days. It would have been an emotional experience writing down everything that is important to you, so you need to step away for a while until these feelings subside.

After several days, you should be able to return to your writing task fresh and focused on what needs to be done. Go back to your paper and, instead of being emotional, this time be ruthless and identify only the really important points that you have noted down.

Cut out what you feel will not add significance to your letter. After that, give a ranking to your important points and use the number one issue to start your letter. You may have even thought of new points to add to the letter.

Make sure you fill it with positive and inspiring messages because you will be sending the letter to many people and you want everyone to look forward to your retirement rather than think of it as the end of your life.

Retirement is mostly a once-in-a-lifetime experience so do not treat your retirement letter as simply another item to be mailed. Buy some special envelopes and make the package look as elegant and spectacular as possible. Make it a treat for your friends and relatives to receive.

Remember, retirement is the start of a brand new, exciting life, so make sure you reflect that in your retirement letter.
